ERMES project meets ENTE RISI for the first official delivery of the project’s Italian maps

On the 17th of July 2015 CNR IREA and Sarmap met Ente Nazionale Risi, one of the main ERMES Italian end-user, to discuss together around the rice data collected by the researchers and the maps produced on the Italian study area during 2015, as foreseen by the project’s agreement.

Ente Risi, operative in the Piedmont and Lombardy rice area, will make use of these data to map the agricultural practices adopted by the local farmers, to better monitor the current rice season and follow it both at regional and municipal level.

We report below some representative maps shown during the meeting an delivered to Ente Risi:

rice_mapThis is the map of the areas cultivated with rice (yellow and orange) within the Italian study area of the project. The map has been derived from Sentinel 1A and Landsat 8 OLI multi-temporal datasets acquired for the year 2015. The map shows the distribution of two classes of rice sown in flooded and not flooded conditions, respectively, at mid-july of the year 2015 (early season rice map).

floodingClicking on the image you have is a synthetic overview of the proportion of flooded rice within the municipalities of the Italian study area of the project.  For each date of the year 2015, when satellite data was available, the color key shows the percentage of the total area mapped as rice (see figure 1) under flooded conditions.
Grey is assigned when on a given date more than 75% of the municipality’s area is not covered by satellite data.

After a first session of discussion regarding the rice maps, CNR IREA staff introduced Ente Risi the prototype of the ERMES Geoportal and the ERMES smart App. They both have been developed by the Consortium in the last months and are now facing an internal test phase.
