ERMES processing chains were used again in 2016 to monitor the phenological cycle of rice in the three European study areas. 2×2 km maps of sowing and flowering dates were created by analyzing MODIS multitemporal data, exploiting the PhenoRice algorithm developed by CNR_IREA.
Example maps obtained in the three countries can be seen below. Exploiting recent years’ historical data, we were also able to see if any particular circumstances (e.g., delayed sowing or flowering) occurred in 2016. No particular differences were found by comparing 2016 with the last five years’ average, suggesting that 2016 was a “standard” year for rice cultivation. Our maps were also used as input for ERMES modelling solutions, which were used to estimate rice blast infection risk, and to perform rice yield forecasting.
