Regional Study Area
The regional Greek study area interest the two main rice cultivation areas of the country, Thessaloniki (180.000ha) and Serres (4.000ha), where cultivation represents almost the 75% of the Greek rice area. The area of Thessaloniki is the traditionally the most main cultivation area for Greece.
Local Study Area
The local study will be conducted in selected rice paddies placed in the two regions, near the cities of Chalastra (Thessaloniki) and Provata (Serres). A special case will be the area of Kalochori, where a rice experimental station of 50 ha of Demeter is located. Additionally, due to the close collaboration of Demeter with local farmers, the project will be able to derive accurate data from almost the 80% of the rice cultivation area of Kalochori (more than 1000 ha).
